Large-sized musical should be just like large-sized
[What is Life] is such a large-sized jukebox musical which has a story of Yoon-Jung Jang, as a menopausal housewife who dreams of being a trot singer to take her life back. Eun-Hee Oh, the mentor said, “It’s been revised into the large-sized musical, but there are still some factors of small-sized.” And she asked, “Large-sized should follow and be like large-sized.” Especially, “Current opening scene at the gynecology without any background music does not have any impact at all. There should be some sort of well-matched input such as background music and dance if this plays its role as a large-sized musical.”
Yoon-Jung has been working at the beauty shop by flapping chops with her high school alumni friends (a.k.a. main customers) to take courage to challenge to be a trot singer. The mentor pointed out, “It is quite agreed that she put herself into courageous while she chatted with her friends, however, these talks should be showed as song and dance just like a large-sized musical instead of small talks. Currently I cannot feel this as a large-sized musical because the important scenes are all read by dialogues.” Also she added, “Many lines are focused just on the explanation so that the music and lyrics does not match with their situations. To maximize the strength as a jukebox musical, right timing should be caught and configured on its situation.”
Mentor also pointed out that Yoon-Jung is the only one who transfers all the lines and situations beside the previous fact that there are too many lines with explanations. Oh advised, “Yoon-Jung sounds too talkative here, and the rest of other characters are too sterile. She sings alone when she goes to her beauty shop. You must consider not making too many scenes about Yoon-Jung herself. Take advantage of many characters for the better structure of large-sized musical, and then other characters’ attractiveness would be rising up with her.”
Arouse audiences’ interest to the end
Yoon-Jung accepted her singing class teacher Tae-Choon and prepared for her trot duet with one of his students Hyun-Sang to overcome her menopausal syndrome. Act 1 ends with her happy family, however Oh said, “Act 1 ended too happy that audiences might feel all the works look ended. Act 1 should end with some crisis for making audiences to expect Act 2, however, no one is curious about Act 2. Even the Act 2 looks unnecessary comments. Musical work should maintain audiences’ interest to the end so that the work can have power to go to the end.”
Also the mentor pointed out that most important scenes were gathered in Act 1 and said, “duet scene of Yoon-Jung and Hyun-Sang is very important that she gets the power back through singing. However, these are shown mostly in Act 1 and burned up too fast so that the interest of musical reduced as each act went on.” In Act 2, Hyun-Sang and Tae-Choon got lost contact with Yoon-Jung because of their car accident, and she suspended them as frauds. Mentor said that this also lead the work into the wrong direction due to the fact that two men finished up their role so that the audiences got lost their interests gradually.
Oh requested, “Not every audience dreams of being a trot singer, so this work looks like fantasy than a story of singer herself. The most important value to her is not to be a singer but to be respected her existence from everyone. But now look at her suspicious question if the two men might be frauds. The fantastic image of this work will be broken and audiences might be bored.” She finally advised, “What is the meaning of being a singer to her life? And what does this situation deliver to audiences? Please consider more about these matters again.”

Family is the closest, but is too hard to understand. What made us get so much tangled just because we are on the name of family? is not only a pretty normal family story but the story of each person who is feeling oppressed by the weight of life everyday even if each generation is different. Specifically this work is a kind of Jukebox musical which is composed of existing trot songs.
